The definition of music has challenged scholars throughout the history of music. But in his seminal work The Anthropology of Music (1964), Alan Merriam proposes a culturally broad based definition of music as a product of human behavior in time and space, and has structure; but its structure cannot have an existence of its own divorced from the behavior, which produced it.
