Angela Vaughan

Angela Vaughan holds a doctoral degree in Educational Psychology from the University of Texas at Austin. She is the Faculty Director of the University 101 program at the University of Northern Colorado (UNC) in Greeley. Angela first developed the program at UNC to support first-semester freshmen; however, it has now expanded to serve all students and support their intellectual and professional development. She began her 20-year career as an educator as a United States Air Force Officer. From there, she has taught and developed curriculum at the high school, community college and university levels. In her present position, she focuses on undergraduate student success as well as helping current and future teachers develop their practice and become more effective. Angela has delivered numerous campus workshops and conference presentations and has authored multiple articles on student learning, success and retention and effective teaching. She also serves as member of the editorial review board for the Journal of College Students Retention: Research, Theory & Practice.

Currently, Dr. Vaughan consults with other first-year programs across the country who want to transform their current programs into an academically rigorous research-based first-year seminar. This includes designing and delivering comprehensive instructor and faculty professional development and training, creating curriculum to serve a wide-range of student populations, and constructing assessments and providing analysis to support short- and long-term program improvement. Her specific expertise is to design resources and programs that serve underrepresented student populations (i.e., first-generation students, conditionally admitted students, and students of color). Results in currently designed programs include up to 20% differences in graduation rates for some of our most at-risk populations, first-generation students who were also conditionally admitted to the university.
