Introduction to Architecture in an Age of Uncertainty explores the agency of architects and architecture’s role in an era heavily influenced by rapid globalization, technological advancement, ethical uncertainty, and environmental crisis.  Contrary to the conventional paradigm of an architectural introductory text, this book does not rely on a historical survey focusing on individual iconic buildings to introduce the value and meaning of architecture, nor is it heavily focused on a conventional view of studio design pedagogy or visualization in architecture.  In essence, it is an introduction to the endeavor of architecture as an act of making, a creative profession, and the quintessential “social” art. It explores its subject matter from the perspective of the intrinsic connection between architectural theory and practice (Praxis) within the context of the “uncertain” status of the discipline today.  It illustrates important foundational concepts to, dialogues emerging from, and discussions centering upon, the role and value of architecture and the built environment within the 21st century.  This is an introductory text to important issues facing the profession as it engages design and construction of the built environment.  It stance is fundamentally formed from an interdisciplinary perspective.  Fundamental aspects of the conceptual language used to formulate architecture’s basic organizing elements, systems, languages, and ethics are discussed from the viewpoint of aesthetics, philosophy, ethics, and meaning.
