American Federal Government: Roots, Rules, Realities, and Relationships furnishes students with an understanding of the structure and function of the United States federal government as well as the roles, behaviors and attitudes of non-governmental agents in the political process.
The publication uses a framework that starts with the assumption that there is a certain order to American politics. Everything from the actions of our executive bureaucracy to the outcomes of our elections follows certain predictable rules and patterns that we can identify and make sense of simply by focusing on the right explanations.
American Federal Government: Roots, Rules, Realities, and Relationships is divided into four major sections:
- The first section introduces students to some of the key concepts, critical vocabulary and foundational knowledge that they will need to make sense of American government and politics.
- Section 2 provides a structural blueprint for the American federal government and examines the operational features of its three major branches.
- The third section shifts from this institutional emphasis to focus on actors—including political parties and interest groups, the media, campaign teams and average voters—and their attitudes in the form of ideologies and public opinion.
- The fourth section concludes with a discussion of the civil rights and civil liberties that have been recognized and are protected under the current system of constitutional law in our country.
