As Mary walked across campus to get some research from the library, she was still a little upset about the phone call she just had with her mother. Practically every time she called home, her mom would ask, “Are you pregnant yet? What are you waiting for? You are 33—the clock is ticking!,” and it was not like her mom was the only one asking the question. So many people felt free to inquire! Mary and her husband Bob both had demanding careers and enjoyed traveling so they had not yet completely settled on when (or maybe even if?) to have kids. And they had just recently relocated a long distance from family, half the country away, moving from the East coast to the Midwest for her new job as an Assistant Professor at Heartland University (HU).
