Welcome to the Baseball Bench Coach, an easy to read and touching book about our national pastime. We keep hearing that baseball is a dying sport, lagging behind the NFL, with its domination of the television networks, and the NBA, a rising star internationally. Don’t believe it! This book tells you to forget all that noise. Baseball is still thriving, weaving a magical journey from your childhood to the present day, catching a foul ball, seeing your favorite players, and munching a hot dog at the ballpark.

Baseball Bench Coach is an adaptation of the blog of the same name. Every Monday morning during MLB’s regular season for the past six seasons, blog followers have awakened to the current topics in the game, complete with historical background and personal touches from the Coach. And now, your Coach has taken 30 of his best articles and put them in this book.

So, what is a bench coach in baseball? Of all the coaches who support the manager of your favorite team, the bench coach might hold the key to your team’s success. Standing beside your manager, he provides in-game guidance on how to make the decisions that impact the outcome of the game. He’s your Radar O’Reilly from M*A*S*H*, one step ahead of your manager and hopefully two steps ahead of your opponent.

And who is your “Baseball Bench Coach”? He is a baseball outsider, who loves the game, watches a ton of it, and wants to share and discuss everything that makes baseball truly great. Let him take you across the diamond and share his favorite posts, family memories, baseball heroes, ballpark terms, and how baseball matters in our world today.

Ron Gieseke

Ron Gieseke, an absolute baseball enthusiast, is your Baseball Bench Coach. His playing days began at the age of 7 on the Knothole (little league) fields in Cincinnati and continued through his youth and adulthood on numerous baseball and softball diamonds in the Midwest. His baseball background also includes 8 years of umpiring, featuring a couple memorable games starring Ken Griffey Jr. and Pete Rose Jr.

Ron learned the game through his late Dad, watching Reds games together in Cincinnati’s old Crosley Field, sitting on the front porch and listening to game broadcasts on WLW-700, and getting post-game, parental advice after good (and sometimes bad) pitching outings. You will learn in the book that his favorite team was the Big Red Machine of the 1970s, the greatest lineup ever assembled.

The Coach’s “happy place” is indeed the ballpark, where he has seen hundreds of MLB, minor league, and youth games. When he is not at the ballpark, you can find him in the family room of his home, scrolling through the daily MLB offerings. He just loves everything about the game and enjoys sharing his love of the game with others.

When Ron is not following baseball, he is teaching law classes in the Chicago area or handling arbitration and mediation cases. And oh yes, you can also find him in his workplace “happy place” at Wrigley Field where he now leads guests in tours of the historic ballpark.

The Coach lives in the Chicago area, enjoying life (and baseball) with his family and friends.
