Abstract

This case study follows the story of Brandon, an 18-year-old first year social work major and psychology minor, as he reflects upon his first semester in college in a series of blog posts that comprise his First Year Experience Seminar Blog. Although Brandon knows he wants to help others and make the world a better place by becoming a social worker, he experiences some challenges learning the ropes of college because he is the first in his family to pursue a college degree. In his first blog, he explores his value, place, and purpose as a college student. In Brandon’s second blog, he discusses what he expects from himself and from his time in college. In his third blog, he discusses how he plans to make new connections on campus and maintain connections back home. This case study concludes with discussion questions focused on memorable messages, identity, and turning points.
