A new strategic management textbook that will engage undergraduate students and empower professors to deliver an exceptional business capstone experience. Business Strategy 2.0 uses an approachable narrative relevant to students and their lives. This approach to learning emphasizes key concepts and frameworks that every professional can develop using their business acumen and practical business knowledge. Readers benefit from relatable, real-world applications of strategy concepts and examples of businesses with which student are familiar, chains they frequent, or apps and services they regularly use—an immersive approach to learning strategy.

A Strategy Experience Resulting in Career Confidence and Success

The authors are veterans of both the research and practice of corporate strategy, with collectively over 20 years hands-on experience successfully teaching strategy as the capstone undergraduate business experience. They have researched and uncovered the critical techniques and learning approaches that result in the professional development essential for business students' success in the early years of their careers. Those success factors include:

  1. Making effective decisions.

  2. Collecting, evaluating, and purposefully analyzing data.

  3. Engendering conceptual agility through increased marketplace awareness.

  4. Maximizing their range of business knowledge to establish a powerful integrative view of workplace problems and opportunities.

  5. Explaining business positions clearly, concisely, and compellingly while simultaneously being prepared to defend their choices.

Appropriate Tone, Depth, and Application

Unlike almost every strategy textbook offered to undergraduate audiences, this textbook takes a very different approach. Rather than an overly academic, exhausting, and ultimately overwhelming inventory of strategic theory, Business Strategy 2.0 takes a practitioner approach—the authors carry on a professional conversation, much like a new strategist would have with their manager or mentor. The goal is for readers to become part of the discussion, quickly turning the knowledge and strategy frameworks into tools and business insights each can comfortably express in their own words. Highlights of the textbook experience include:

  • Supports student understanding of how strategy theory and frameworks are used to make highly effective business decisions.

  • Approachable and relevant narrative—speaks to a specific learner: undergraduate business students from differing disciplines and diverse backgrounds and experiences.

  • Prior knowledge connections—provides cues and references to key knowledge, skills, and abilities across business disciplines.

  • Brief, one-paragraph Perspective Examples throughout the text provide readers with a quick and easy-to-understand illustration of a concept or tool through familiar industries and businesses with which readers frequently shop.

  • Engaging assessments and activities—presents readers with learning activities beyond the traditional approaches, including case studies, reflective questions relating to readers’ future professional lives, and real-time feedback to instructors on reader comfort and learning needs.
