Case Studies in Child and Family Services is a collection of case studies and vignettes applicable to working with children, adolescents, and families. This text brings alive concepts learned in classes and theories of human and family studies. Through these vignettes and cases, the reader can apply concepts learned and design interventions, classrooms, home visits, and activities for young children and their families.
The typical home visitor will face daily challenges that range from education, poverty, child abuse, domestic violence, disability, unemployment and housing issues, and concerns surrounding parent-child interaction. Other areas include home visits with families embedded in the adoption process, to families who have a parent with a chronic illness. This text serves as a supplemental text that helps to better train service providers by preparing them for real world experiences, applying research to their employment positions, aiding in the realization that service providers are needed and make a difference in the lives of families and children, and assist in working with children in the classroom setting. Darbi Haynes-Lawrence, Ph.D. is a professor at Western Kentucky University in the Child and Family Services program. She earned her degrees from Indiana University.
As she is known to her students, peers, and community members, Dr. Darbi has Multiple Sclerosis (MS). She uses her experiences as a researcher and a person living with MS to educate as many people as possible about the disease. She is the author of three children's books for the MS Foundation, A Conversation about M.onkey S.not (MS); Along Came Jae: A Conversation about Service Dogs for People with MS; and A Conversation about Disabilities."
As well as conducting, publishing, and presenting research, Dr. Darbi is passionate about teaching. Also, an award-winning educator, she teaches Parenting Strategies, Child & Family Stress, Family Home Visiting, Challenging Behaviors in Young Children, plus many other courses. Dr. Darbi and her husband have one child, Samantha Jo.
D’Lee Babb earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Family Relations from Oklahoma Baptist University and her Master of Science in Child Development where she research father involvement with their children. She obtained her Ph.D. in Human Sciences with a concentration in Child Development from Oklahoma State University in 2010. Her dissertation topic was Pre-Kindergarten Classroom Practices in Oklahoma Public Schools: Influence of Teacher and Principal Beliefs and Characteristics. D’Lee Babb currently serves as an Associate Professor of Early Childhood Education and Child Studies Western Kentucky University in the department of Applied Human Sciences.
Dr. Babb currently teaches courses such as: Child Development, Assessment of Young Children, Infant and Toddler Development and Curriculum, and The Role of Play in Child Development. In the past, D’Lee has taught in preschool, toddler, and infant classrooms, led conferences about working with preschoolers, worked with early interventions, and conducted research. Her research interests include working with third culture children in acculturation in public preschools, developmentally appropriate practices in public preschools, and teacher education. She is heavily involved with the National Association for the Education of Young Children Higher Education Accreditation system and serves with ACCESS: Associate Degree Early Childhood Teacher Educators.
