This text is designed for a course titled “The City in the Western Tradition.” The course surveys the broad sweep of the history of Western Civilization through the development of cities at different stages in that history. At least three broad sets of issues should be discussed at the outset for readers of this book:
• What do we mean by the term city?
• What do we mean by the Western tradition or Western culture?
• How do geographers approach these topics?
