Experiential Learning is not just another class - it's a unique opportunity to learn outside the traditional classroom setting. While classrooms have their place, the Pragmatic Studies Program is about taking higher learning and turning it into authentic experiences that can be shared among the group. This is a privilege that not all students get to experience. Dr. Tera Torres has coined the phrase “doing life differently” as the motto for this program. When someone “does life” differently, it can’t be expected that a traditional lecture, writing a paper, and taking a final will be effective for learning. Each chapter of this journey correlates to a theme for the week as jumping-off points for ideas about teaching or learning the necessary social and study skills to succeed in college at any level. Chapters include activities or events found outside of the classroom to progress social confidence in authentic situations. While classes may be expected to meet for a short period in a designated room, going out and applying these skills in places both on and off campus have proven to be more beneficial for both the students and the professors.
