Communication Disorders: Foundations and Clinical Applications for Emerging Clinicians is presented in an innovative e-book format that combines functional content knowledge with clinical application skills. The purpose of each chapter is to provide a brief review of a content area in speech-language pathology and highlight resources relevant to working with individuals with communication disorders in that area. References and resources are provided throughout each chapter for additional discussion. Content areas covered in this text include professionalism, culturally responsive practice, speech and sound disorders, auditory skills, literacy skills, social communication, augmentative and alternative communication, language skills across the lifespan, stuttering, behavior management, swallowing, voice disorders, and disability and transition services. This text is a culmination of years of clinical practice, research, and teaching experience. The development of this e-book was inspired by a desire to have a student-friendly, interactive text that combines content knowledge with a strong foundation of applicable clinical skills and resources.

Rachel Glade is a certified Speech-Language Pathologist and Listening and Spoken Language Specialist, and Certified Auditory-Verbal Therapist. Rachel is a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Arkansas where she is the Program Director of the Communication Sciences and Disorders program as well as the Director of the Honors Program for the College of Education and Health Professions. She teaches courses and provides clinical supervision for graduate and undergraduate student clinicians and has published and presented her work all over the world.
Alliete Alfano, PhD, CCC-SLP, LSLS Cert. AVT, is a bilingual speech-language pathologist, assistant professor in Communication Sciences and Disorders at Florida International University, a LSLS certified Auditory-Verbal Therapist, and the President of the Alfano Center (a private practice in Miami). She provides AVT to families who have children with hearing loss in English and Spanish at the Alfano Center. As the director of the Hearing, Empowerment, and Linguistic Diversity (HELD) Research Lab, her research agenda includes: 1) understanding the bilingual speech, language, and hearing development of individuals with hearing loss; 2) developing clinical tools to assess Spanish-speaking speech, language, and hearing skills of bilingual individuals with hearing loss; 3) developing auditory training tools to enhance the hearing skills of individuals with hearing loss who use hearing technology; and 4) training individuals from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds to work with patients with communication disorders who are from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. She teaches courses in diagnostics, bilingual language development, and aural rehabilitation, presents in Spanish and English on AVT, and mentors AVT mentees internationally. She is a member of ASHA’s 2022 Convention Topic Committee on Listening, Language, and Speech in Children who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing, FLASHA’s LSLS Track Planning Group member since 2018, was a member of AG Bell’s LSLS Exam Development in English and Spanish, and is a member of AG Bell’s Certification Committee.
