This book examines the concepts of community relations and what it means from a community and a law enforcement perspective. The better we all understand the concept of community relations, it will provide a roadmap on how to build stronger bonds between law enforcement and the community. It is imperative to understand the history of law enforcement and how police officers conducted their duties since the beginning of its inception. An in-depth examination of police eras is covered to provide students the enriched history of law enforcement in the United States. The pros and cons are highlighted to exemplify the successes and challenges during each policing era. The challenges law enforcement and community members face are very complex and are clearly defined in the text. 

Understanding these community challenges is vital when exploring the various components and ideas of community relations in today’s society. From a community relations standpoint, law enforcement and the community must understand the daily challenges to implement change. More importantly, in this text, the students will understand community relations concepts and know how to apply them in the workforce. 

The community relations framework and concepts are presented in various ways including the following: scenarios, relevant community relations empirical evidence and research, crime theories, crime statistics, evaluation of community programs, and many other methodologies. These topics are covered in three sections which include the following: history of community policing/law enforcement, community policing and crime, and community policing strategies/Implementation. The concepts covered in the book are reinforced by critical thinking questions and essay questions at the end of each chapter. Students are provided with flash cards regarding the key topics for each chapter and study guide questions. Chapter test banks are available for faculty members.

Aaron Watkin

Aaron Watkin was originally born in Fresno, California; however, he grew up in Bakersfield, California. From an early age, Aaron’s parents (Steven and Kimberly Watkin) instilled in him the importance of education and serving others. Aaron’s family re-located to Bakersfield California due to his father obtaining a job at California State University Bakersfield. 

Aaron attended Ridgeview High School where he graduated in 2009. Upon completing high school, Aaron continued his education at California State University Bakersfield. Aaron obtained a bachelor’s degree majoring in criminal justice and minored in public administration. Upon completing his bachelor’s degree, Aaron was hired by the Los Angeles County Sheriff Department as a Deputy Sheriff. Due to having close family ties and connections to the Bakersfield community, Aaron lateraled to the Bakersfield Police Department. While working in a patrol capacity, Aaron went back to college and obtained his master’s degree in public administration from California State University Bakersfield. 

Aaron has had the pleasure of serving in a law enforcement capacity for over a decade. Aaron has had a wide variety of law enforcement experiences which include the following: patrol operations, investigations of crimes against people and property, court room testimony, field training officer, law enforcement speaker, Public Information Officer, detective work, complex and in-depth investigations, background investigator, and community relations officer. Throughout Aaron’s law enforcement career, his heart is enriched by building strong relationships with the community.

Aaron has served as an adjunct professor at Bakersfield College since 2020. Aaron has taught several classes within the criminal justice department at Bakersfield College. Aaron has taught the following courses: Community relations, Criminal Profiling of Violent Offenders, Introduction to Evidence, Criminal Investigation, and Forensic Scientific Aspects of Evidence. Aaron has a passion for education and empowers every student who takes his class to reach their educational endeavors. Aaron brings a wide variety of educational and professional experiences to his classes to guide his students through the concepts of each course. Aaron understands the challenges students face on a daily basis; however, he is motivated to ensure each student walks away from his class with a better understanding of the criminal justice system and profession.
