Technical Writing provides an introduction to technical writing for undergraduate students, especially those in STEM fields, but—unlike other technical writing textbooks—this textbook incorporates aspects of creative writing into its explanations.

Thus, this textbook is both creative and practical. It aims to be an exemplar of both professional and technical writing. We will look at methods for creating good, solid professional communiqués, explore some of the theories behind successful communication, and compile an initially small, though thoroughly professional, set of writing samples for you to build upon in your future career.

Each chapter of Technical Writing includes:

Angelina Brooks

Angelina Oberdan Brooks earned an M.A. in English and an M.F.A. in Creative Writing (Poetry) at McNeese State University in 2010. Subsequently, she began teaching technical writing as a lecturer at Clemson University and fell in love with workplace communications’ practical applications and commitment to audience and page design. Brooks has since held a variety of teaching positions at both community colleges and research universities.

Brooks’s poetry, essays, and reviews have appeared in many journals, including Cold Mountain Review, Mobius, Italian Americana, Southern Indiana Review, and Yemassee. Her poetry won the Joyce Scantleberry Award, and her poems and chapbook have been finalists The Lunch Break Zine’s Lorraine Cavallaro Poetry Prize, Split Rock Press’s Chapbook Series, and the Lit/South Award.

Brooks has worked on many book projects. She co-edited a collection of essays by and about Daniela Gioseffi, Pioneering Italian American Culture: Escaping La Vita Della Cucina (Bordighera Press, 2013), and she wrote the introduction to a bilingual collection of poetry by Elisa Bagiani (Guest in the Woods, Chelsea Press, 2013). Her textbook projects have included working on Thomas Oberdan’s Science, Technology, and the Texture of our Lives (Tavenner Publishing Co., 2017), serving on the faculty advisory board for The Hub by Peter Adams (Macmillan, 2020), and collaborating on the instructor’s manual with Elizabeth Catanese for Alfred Rosa and Paul Eschholtz’s fourteenth edition of Models for Writers (Bedford St. Martins, 2021).
