Abstract
This specific case study deals with a couple (an Asian wife and American husband) who have two young biracial kids. The husband, Mark, feels that since the children are born in the United States, they should be raised with American values. The Asian wife, Ling, would like to expose the kids to Asian beliefs, language, and customs. Although Ling was born in China, she has been living in the United States for over 20 years. She has developed an appreciation for both cultures. Ling is torn between respecting her husband’s perspectives and accommodating her parents’ heritage. Mark thinks that the children will be confused and is worried that other children will mock their cultural differences. He does not want to confuse his children and feels that they are too young to learn about other cultures. Mark feels that Ling is Americanized, and he does not see the need to have the kids learn about their mother’s culture, language, or viewpoints.
