Sally Ingles

An experienced, certified public school teacher, Dr. Ingles taught at the elementary, middle school, and secondary levels before transitioning to higher education. While teaching undergraduate level education courses in the School of Education at Spring Arbor University, Dr. Ingles’s passion for measuring and developing candidates’ dispositions and attributes was ignited. Her subsequent research was a validation study of a structured group interview used to measure teacher candidates’ attributes and dispositions. A summation of that research study was recently published in the Journal of Scholastic Inquiry: Education.

Dr. Ingles’s research on teacher candidate selection criteria also provided the foundation for the transformation of her institution’s teacher candidate admission and induction processes. One of the hallmarks of the transformation was a newly developed induction course, “Critical Skills for Professional Educators,” which replaced the “Introduction to Teaching” course. This professional development workbook is based upon Dr. Ingles’s research and the related strategies she developed to shape candidates’ skills and dispositions.

Dr. Ingles currently serves as the Dean of the School of Educational Leadership at Indiana Wesleyan University. In addition, she serves as a conference speaker and consultant on teacher candidate selection practices, sharing her research at regional and national conferences. Dr. Ingles travels across the country conducting workshops and training sessions for educator preparation providers who are seeking to implement research-based approaches to measuring teacher candidates’ skills and dispositions at the time of admission
