Developmental Reading and Academic Strategies for Academic Success in Secondary and Higher Education focuses on reading techniques and writing concepts in the following areas:

  • General reading strategies (highlighting and note-taking)
  • Identifying important ideas
  • Identifying writing patterns
  • Finding the meaning in visual content
  • Reading strategies for the research process

Although the book is meant for a reading or writing course, it also is beneficial in a college preparatory classroom since it incorporates other academic strategies beyond the teaching of reading techniques and writing patterns. That is why some of the major subjects in this textbook also include the following areas:

  • Understanding textbook design
  • Academic organization
  • Know your learning style
  • Test-taking strategies
  • External and internal barriers to academic success

Developmental Reading and Academic Strategies for Academic Success in Secondary and Higher Education is created as a three-ring binder to encourage students to apply the academic organizational strategies suggested in the textbook.  The concepts are also written in easy-to-understand paragraphs and terminology for developmental learners and those students who are new to the ideas of academic organization, writing patterns, and reading strategies with all four major learning styles in mind.

Companion Teacher Materials

Along with a variety of links within each chapter for reviewing and applying concepts, there is also a companion site for teachers to use that includes the following resources:

  • Quizlet flashcard sets: Each chapter section has its own flashcard set. Instructors can use them as part of their classroom instruction or for students to use as a study tool. The flashcard sets can also be used to create customized tests.
  • Chapter tests: There is a test created for each chapter. They can be downloaded and printed out for face-to-face classroom use or attached to online courses.
  • Test answer keys: Each available chapter test also has an answer key.
