Down to Character is an examination of 16 virtues taught by Booker T. Washington. More than 120 years ago, Booker T. Washington delivered evening lectures and wrote papers for the students, faculty, and staff of Tuskegee Institute. These teachings were impactful in the early 1900s and remain relevant today. The virtues he emphasized continue to serve as foundational principles for developing mental discipline, moral conviction, ethical behavior, and strong character in today’s leaders. Building on Washington’s original lectures, Down to Character explores contemporary research on character, examines real-life examples where the absence of character led to negative outcomes, and outlines a practical framework for teaching the essential components of character to emerging leaders. Designed to accompany a series of video lectures, this resource is ideal for late high school and college-level students.
