"In the dynamic landscape of education, particularly within Career and Technical Education (CTE) and Adult Education, it is essential to continuously evolve and enhance teaching practices to meet the diverse needs of learners. As Professor and Chair of the largest Department of Professional Studies on the West Coast, I witnessed firsthand the profound impact that well-structured creden-tial programs can have on both educators and students. Over the years, I created a 9-unit CTE cre-dential program and a 9-unit Adult Education credential program that provided new or prospective instructors with the basic skills and knowledge to serve their students. That model has served as an exemplar for programs throughout California, inspiring other comparable institutions to develop their programs based on this framework.
One of the key insights from my experience is the urgency that adult students feel in pursuing their credential courses. Many are eager to complete their training so they can begin teaching career and technical subjects and adult education courses. This urgency drives a preference for credential programs that require fewer units, a need that is fully addressed by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC), which mandates a 9-unit credential pathway.
To ensure the success of these programs, I was pleased to hire Dr. Viktor Wang as the credential coordinator at California State University, Long Beach (CSULB). Dr. Wang has a remarkable ability to connect theory with practice, utilizing both his own publications and my works in his instruction. His insights and dedication have been invaluable in shaping the next generation of educators.
In light of this, I am excited to introduce Dr. Wang’s latest contribution to the field, Effective Teaching Strategies for Designated Subjects: Principles and Methods. This book is an important resource, grounded in course objectives and CTC standards, offering practical strategies and evidence-based methodologies designed to empower educators in their teaching practices.
Each chapter of this book meticulously addresses various aspects of effective teaching, from foundational principles to innovative strategies that engage learners in designated subjects. Dr. Wang’s expertise shines through as he navigates essential topics such as understanding learner needs, curriculum design, instructional methodologies, assessment and evaluation, and the creation of inclusive learning environments. His emphasis on differentiated instruction and the use of technology further ensures that educators are equipped to meet the diverse challenges present in today’s classrooms. As educators, we are entrusted with the vital responsibility of shaping the minds and futures of our students. Dr. Wang’s work provides the guidance and support needed to foster successful learning experiences. By applying the principles and strategies outlined in this book, educators can effectively engage their students, adapt to various learning needs, and ultimately, make a lasting impact on their educational journeys.
I wholeheartedly endorse Effective Teaching Strategies for Designated Subjects: Principles and Methods as an essential guide for all educators dedicated to excellence in teaching. I am confident that this book will serve as a vital resource, not just for those pursuing their credentials but for all educators striving to enhance their practice and support their students in achieving their goals."
