This lab manual and notebook was created for the course BIOL 113N Environment and Man at Old Dominion University (ODU). The manual provides students with the information necessary to conduct activities and hands-on experiments that will enhance their understanding of the major concepts and issues of the Environmental Science. The content introduces students to the basics of scientific inquiry, scientific method, and hypothesis testing— the universal approaches that scientists use to address the questions about the empirical world. In addition, this volume also serves as a lab notebook.

This Manual consists of three main sections: course introductory information, labs, and appendices.
1. Course introductory material include standard Lab Safety Rules, which are universal for all science labs at Old Dominion University and Lab Policies that are specific for BIOL 113N lab.
2. All labs consist of the activities related to one or more Environmental Science topics. Each lab is generally organized following this format:
Pre-Lab Reading: Selection of topics from the textbook that need to be read prior to the lab in order to better understand and complete lab activities.
Objectives: List of what students are to learn as a result of completing the specific activity.
Activities: List of activities included in the current lab.
Introduction: Brief background information and major terminology on the topic of the current lab; also, a purpose and an overview of the exercises.
References: Sources that were used for the preparation of this lab topic. Hypotheses: Provide a hypothesis or hypotheses being tested in this activity.
Materials: List of materials that are necessary to conduct the activity.

Tatyana Lobova

Tatyana Lobova, Ph.D. is a Master Lecturer in the Department of Biological Sciences at Old Dominion University. She earned her Ph.D. in Botany from the Komarov Botanical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences and her M.S. in Biology/Botany from St. Petersburg State University. Dr. Lobova’s expertise lies in botany and plant biology, with a strong emphasis on plant–animal interactions, tropical ecology, and conservation. Her research includes biotic surveys, plant dispersal by animals, and biodiversity inventory projects, particularly in Neotropical forest ecosystems.
