John
Mott
Dr. John H. Mott is an Associate Professor in the School of Aviation & Transportation Technology at Purdue University. A summa cum laude graduate of the University of Alabama with bachelor’s and master’s Degrees in Electrical Engineering, and of Purdue University with a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering, he also possesses an FAA Commercial Pilot Certificate with Instrument and Multiengine ratings, an FAA Flight Instructor Certificate with Airplane Single-and Multiengine and Instrument ratings, and an FAA Ground Instructor Certificate with Advanced and Instrument ratings. He holds type ratings in the Beech King Air 300, Hawker HS-125, and Canadair Challenger 600. He has worked as a flight instructor, a charter pilot, chief pilot, and director of training for a FAR 135 operator, an airline pilot flying the SA-226TC Metroliner, and a corporate pilot in many different models of aircraft.
Dr. Mott serves as the Director of the Advanced Aviation Analytics Center of Research Excellence (A3IR-CORE) and was the founding editor of the Journal of Aviation Technology & Engineering, where he served as executive editor through 2018. Dr. Mott’s research is focused primarily on the aggregation of distributed data related to various operational aspects of transportation systems, the analysis of that data using deterministic and stochastic mathematical modeling, and the development of related tools to facilitate improvements to the safety and efficiency of those systems. While this research is inherently interdisciplinary and crosses boundaries between the school’s focus areas of safety, quality, and sustainability, Dr. Mott’s principal focal areas are those of quality and safety. The related challenge is the issue of employing data and decision science to improve the quality and safety of the services provided within the transportation industry, which aligns with the restoration and improvement of urban infrastructure, one of the National Academy of Engineering’s 14 Grand Challenges. The collection and analysis of data from transportation systems facilitates improved management decisions regarding those systems and ultimately improves the quality of life of those who utilize transportation services. Prior to joining Purdue, Dr. Mott was Engineering Manager for a firm in Birmingham, Alabama, and also operated an electronics design and manufacturing business for many years. He is a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and the Chair of the Signal Processing and Communications Society Chapters of the Central Indiana Section, a member of the Board of Trustees of the University Aviation Association (UAA), and a member of the Standing Committee on Airfield Capacity and Delay of the Transportation Research Board of the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine. He is also a member of the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE).
Thomas
Carney
Dr. Thomas Carney is a Professor Emeritus of Aviation & Transportation Technology and former department head of the Department of Aviation Technology at Purdue University, where he taught from 1972 through 2018. Dr. Carney has more than 53 years of experience as a pilot, with more than 11,000 flight hours, and holds the Airline Transport Pilot certificate with multiengine, Mitsubishi Diamond, and Beechjet type ratings, in addition to the Certified Flight Instructor certificate with airplane single-and multiengine, and instrument airplane ratings. He was the 1996 recipient of the James G. Dwyer award for outstanding undergraduate teaching in the School of Technology and is a member of the inaugural group of 225 faculty members included in the Purdue University Book of Great Teachers. In 2002, he was awarded the William A. Wheatley award by the University Aviation Association. Dr. Carney was the recipient of the 2003 Outstanding Alumnus Award from the Earth and Atmospheric Sciences Department at Purdue, and in 2012 he received the Distinguished Science Alumnus award from the Purdue College of Science. In 2004, he was named “Member of the Year” by the Council on Aviation Accreditation, and in 2006, he received the President’s Award from the University Aviation Association, for long-term leadership and service. In 2008, he received a recognition award for “leadership and guidance...provided to future airline pilots”, from the Airline Pilots Association. Dr. Carney received the Aviation Accreditation Board International (AABI) Chairperson’s Award, in July 2017, and in April 2018, he was presented with the FAA Wright Brothers’ Master Pilot Award.
In addition to his flight background, Dr. Carney holds M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Atmospheric Science, and prior to his retirement maintained a courtesy faculty appointment in the Purdue Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. His primary research areas of interest in aviation and atmospheric science include aviation meteorology and the impact of weather on aviation operations, synoptic-scale dynamics and energetics and the interactions between synoptic-and mesoscale motion fields, aviation leadership and management, and effective methods for recruiting and preparing the next generation of aviation professionals. He is the author, or co-author, of more than 100 publications and presentations, and is a current or former member of a number of national and international organizations and com-mittees relating to collegiate flight education and accreditation, aviation meteorology, corporate flight operations, and the ICAO Next Generation of Aviation Professionals Task Force. Dr. Carney formerly served as the senior editor of the Collegiate Aviation Review and is a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education and Research. He currently serves as the AABI Vice President of Accreditation and chairman of the Accreditation Committee and is a past chairman of the Certified Aviation Manager Governing Board (CAMGB) of the National Business Aviation Association (NBAA). He also served as the founding chairman of the NGAP (Next Generation of Aviation Professionals) Task Force of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). Dr. Carney currently serves as chairman of the Friends of Mammoth Cave National Park Board of Directors and as expert witness in litigation involving flight operations and aviation meteorology.
