Ethics is one of the most misunderstood aspects of contemporary life. It is part philosophy, part critical thinking, and a full examination of yourself and the world. Ethics is a lifelong process of learning and understanding.

Ethics in Our World: A Case Consult Approach helps readers to develop the skills necessary to make sound moral decisions using ethical reasoning. Each chapter presents a topic; provides opportunities and exercises that promote critical reflection on each particular topic or issue; offers the opportunity to apply their knowledge in a way that can be shared with instructors, the class, or both; and allows students to reflect on the material.

Ethics in Our World: A Case Consult Approach is divided into three sections:

  • Chapter 1 begins with an overview of critical thinking and ethics.

  • Chapter 2 discusses different types of values, highlights moral values, and presents the five ethical theories used in the textbook: duty ethics, utilitarianism, virtue ethics, ethics of care, and rights theory.

  • Chapters 4 through 10 present broader ethical topics that deal with several moral issues (abortion, euthanasia, distributive justice, etc.).

The workbook provides a template for classroom discussion, fostered by students’ completed work, which if uncompleted provides a means by which to evaluate the student. In other words, instructors gain a valuable tool for teaching, testing, and generating discussion, whereas students gain a valuable tool for learning, being prepared, and judging their progress and success.
