Professor Burgess has been with Broward College for 20 years. A graduate of Broward College herself, she went on to earn a Master’s Degree from University of Florida in Pharmacology and a Masters in Biotechnology and Molecular Biology from Johns Hopkins University. Professor Burgess’s teaching philosophy centers around application, discovery, and diversity. She teaches courses online as well as face-to-face courses and laboratories for majors and non-majors in biology, microbiology, and medical and veterinary entomology. Professor Burgess loves the outdoors, especially when she gets to spend time with her son and take her dog Molly for a swim.

Dr. Idelisa Ayala has been teaching at Broward College for 15 years. She earned her BS in Chemistry from the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras Campus. Dr. Ayala earned a PhD in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, and Biophysics from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities Campus. She teaches biology for majors and non-majors; microbiology lab, genetics, and molecular & cellular biology. Dr. Ayala’s teaching philosophy includes encouraging student learning and success by engaging them in the classroom and in the lab.

HORMANN
Born and raised in Suriname, South America, Dr. Vanessa Hörmann earned her PhD in Integrative Biology from Florida Atlantic University. She has been a biology professor at Broward College’s Central campus for over 10 years and teaches a wide range of topics including non-majors biology, anatomy and physiology, and genetics. Dr. Hörmann’s teaching philosophy centers around making lecture topics relatable to the student’s field of study, while encouraging active learning and critical thinking.
