As you reflect on your educational experiences up to this point, take a moment and consider the factors that contributed to your learning. Often, we initially focus on things such as tests or assessments, the rigor or quality of information being shared, or modes of delivery (e.g., face-to-face vs. use of technology to deliver content) when describing the quality of a class. But have you stopped to consider the impact that an instructor’s communication has on learning? More specifically, it is important to look beyond the verbal content shared by instructors and explore how nonverbal behaviors are used to add meaning to the messages being communicated in classes.
