Finding Human Centered Design Solutions: Exploring Interiority Attributes

Human Centered Design Solutions: Exploring Interiority Attributes explores and advances the importance of human centered design in architecture, interior design and allied fields in design. By definition, the concept of interiority (the mental and physical essence of the interior) closely aligns with human connection to space and place. Human-centered solutions are dominant objectives, particularly, in twenty-first-century design missions and methodologies. As students examine interiority in design and its relationship to human-centered objectives, they will have the opportunity to experience equity, diversity, inclusion and belonging in shaping the built environment. Furthermore, students will be able to experience and recognize key design-related precedents including designers, architects, buildings, and historical movements, which demonstrate interiority and human centered characteristics. The book features theory with practical assignments that range from self-directed field trips, to an introductory research/programming project to a five-week design exercise, all providing ways to apply human centered design.
In addition, Human Centered Design Solutions: Exploring Interiority Attributes features:
- Numerous images throughout to illustrate text information
- Quizzes at the end of each chapter to promote critical thinking
- A variety of instructor resources: suggested readings, a design project rubric and a visual essay on vernacular interiority.
- Case studies of different typologies that require attention to human centered design. Included are internationally acclaimed MASS Design Group’s work in Rwanda and Montana as well as Architects Hawaii Limited (ahl.)’s Wahiawa Civic Center with a rich community and historical background. Also included are images of a health care facility and several examples of student exercises: Field Studies and Interiority for a Veteran’s Community Design and Interiority and Sustainability for a Small Dwelling Design.
