The purpose of Foundation of Industrial Design: Working with Principles is to capture a teaching structure for the beginning industrial design student. These lessons are typically taught as the initial class for industrial designers who will be taking a series of studio and associated classes at the collegiate level. The term “foundation” in the title implies the topics discussed here are just the beginning or framework on which more detailed and depth of the topic will be built upon. The chapters are presented in a sequence that can be followed starting in formative teaching style, building as it goes. Each chapter covers an overriding theme with examples and exercises. The exercises are used to fortify the message of the chapter and advance the industrial designer’s thought process.

Think of this book’s information to be the roots of the tree supporting a myriad of design possibilities no matter the educational background. The book describes the principles and shows examples. As an introductory industrial design course there are many aspects that are only touched upon to bring awareness of the term or topic. For mastery of the topics, it is recommended that the principles are used as the foundational scaffolding for more advanced courses in a wide variety of human-centered artifact creational journeys.
