The Fundamentals of Family and Consumer Sciences is intended to be a comprehensive and up to date reference text for students of Family and Consumer Sciences, human development, family studies and nutrition.  This text will be a major source of information to health care professionals seeking to understand related issues that are sometimes complicated by social and economic circumstances of the family and their environment.

The practical nature of this book originates from over 25 years of the author’s teaching, research, and service as well as observing other health care professionals in the field.  In this book, the author aims to examine phases of growth and development, aspects of pregnancy, substance abuse and mental health as they unfold throughout the life span.  Students reading this book will gain theoretical understanding empirical foundations in which to become critical thinkers, to engage in instructional interaction, career opportunities, and evaluate outcomes.

In this book, the author attempts to present case studies that are relevant to family and consumer sciences and human development that are interesting, stimulating, and that lend themselves to understanding the relationship between human needs and services.  The organization of the case studies suggested activities is such that it facilitates a logical and systematic model of instruction in family and consumer sciences.  The family and consumer sciences content works well to challenge students to develop their critical thinking and problem-solving skills concerning individuals, families, and the community.

Although the book is used primarily as an instruction tool, the material is also helpful to other health care professionals, especially those in public health, cooperative extension, dietetics, and nursing.

Lurline Whittaker

Lurline V. Whittaker, Ph.D., is an associate professor of Family and Consumer Sciences at Morgan State University where she teaches undergraduate courses in Family and Consumer Sciences. She earned the Ph.D. degree in Home Economics Education at The Pennsylvania State University; MPH from the School of Public Health - Johns Hopkins University; M.S. in Home Economics from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana; and the Bachelor of Science degree from Tuskegee University.

She is the author of The Fundamentals of Contemporary Nutrition published by McGraw Hill College Custom Series. Other publications include a monograph and a number of articles in textbooks and professional journals. Dr. Whittaker is a certified nutritionist and dietitian and served as a nutrition consultant at several Head Start Centers in Baltimore, Maryland. She is a member of the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences.

As the former Acting Chair for the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences, she served as the coordinator for the Accreditation of the Family and Consumer Sciences program from the Council for Accreditation of the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences through 2030. Dr. Whittaker has received awards for her scholarship including National Institutes of Health and Faculty Innovation Award from Morgan State University. With over 25 years of teaching at the undergraduate level, she taught courses in early childhood development, marriage and family relations, parenting, human sexuality and behavior, orientation to family and consumer sciences, exit seminar in family and consumer sciences, and entrepreneurship in family and consumer sciences.
