Generation YZ peers into the world of ultra selective admissions at elite American universities. It is meant to serve as a guide for students and families preparing to navigate the college application process. Why do straight A students get rejected? How do you write a compelling personal essay? What are the keys to standing out in a competitive crowd? Chapters provide useful insider tips that answer these questions and offer strategies related to securing admission at the most competitive schools while earning scholarships that would allow students to matriculate. The author draws on insight and expertise gained from positions held at Stanford University (Seasonal Reader), Bates College (Assistant Dean of Admission), and graduate school research in higher education at Middlebury College's MIIS Graduate School.

Luis Martinez

Luis Martinez has been active in supporting the higher education of youth for the past 8 years. He worked for Stanford's Office of Undergraduate Admission during the 2013-2014 and 2014-2015 admissions cycles, where he was responsible for evaluating and scoring both domestic and international applications. His work was an integral part of an ultra-selective system that determined which students the university would admit, wait list, or deny. Previous to his work at Stanford, Luis served as Assistant Dean of Admission at Bates College, a liberal arts college in New England. At Bates, he led initiatives focused on recruitment and enrollment of students from the U.S. and South America. In 2012, he founded and managed the first Hidden Ivies Consortium in Albuquerque, New Mexico, which brought together 34 elite institutions including the University of Chicago, Johns Hopkins, USC, and Williams. He resides in San Francisco, California.

"Luis' advice is insightful, compelling, and should be taken seriously by students striving to attend an elite college. Heed his call for lifelong learning. Internalize his encouragement to make an impact and willingly accept his nudge to innovate. As an educator, I will definitely impart these values to students and parents for years to come."

"Few can speak about college admissions with the same insight, energy, and spirit as Luis Martinez. For students and parents alike, Generation YZ offers an invaluable set of lessons for success in college admissions and, perhaps more importantly, in life."
Michael Martinez
Princeton University Alumnus
Haverford College, Dean of First-Year Students

"I was impressed by the breadth of Generation YZ. It answers questions that students and parents both want to ask and provides a candid overview of the admissions process at highly selective universities. The information provided could change a kid's life, and families would be well advised to read it carefully."
Michael Agosto
Peddie School, Associate Director of Admission

"Generation YZ is a practical guide for the self-driven and ambitious student to make an impact with their application. Mr. Martinez includes keys to investing in one's personal growth and self discovery, recognizing that such growth takes time throughout high school, not just when sitting to complete an application."
Tara Nelan
Tampa Preparatory School, Associate Director of College Counseling

"Generation YZ provides an amazing guide for students who are willing to take action. The chapters cover everything from tips on writing a personal statement, to advice on how to better connect with peers and teachers. It's not just about getting into a prestigious college, it's about making the most of your extracurricular and academic experience."
William Ball
The Calverton School, Dean of Students and Head Lacrosse Coach

"The cultural competencies and international perspectives stressed in Generation YZ were right on target. More and more of our students are striving for a global education, and this book reveals why such an education is so important. Students that read it will gain an advantage during the application process, while learning a lot about themselves at the same time!"
