As the vast literature on group communication demonstrates, group interaction is perva- sive in human life. People participate in groups in families, in schools, at work, online, in community organizations, and in sports and recreation. This book highlights the per va- siveness of group life by providing narrative cases of groups in a wide range of contexts. As Naumes and Naumes (1999) remind us, using case studies in the classroom provides stu- dents with the opportunity to actively participate in the process of learning and see theory play out in actual occurrences. Cases that highlight group life are important pedagogical tools because they encourage students to discuss, analyze, and develop a grounded under- standing of group communication theory and practices.

This book is filled with stories of real groups in real contexts. Such groups include hospi- tal teams, a Nicaraguan coffee cooperative, a kayaking trip, civic leaders holding a citizen discussion, a student senate, online groups, a community choir, grocery co-op employees, a basketball team, a school boar d, a dance tr oupe, and a jur y. Written as narratives, our cases draw from the original research and/or lived experience of well-known and up-and- coming group communication scholars. The stories are realistic, vivid, engaging, and provide compelling examples of gr oup interaction with lively dialogue and an insider’ s view of group life. As such, our cases can bring gr oup communication concepts/theory to life and help students empathize with characters who encounter challenges and successes in group life.
