She took a deep breath and got out of bed. She eased her feet into her slippers and tip-toed down the hall. She peeked into the girls’ room and sighed with relief to find them both fast asleep. Lately, Eden, her four-year-old, had been waking up in the middle of the night, and it sometimes took an hour of rocking and singing softly to get her back to sleep. Janie was grateful to see Eden contently sleeping—her right arm covering her forehead and her curly brown hair—but frustrated that she herself was not.
