This NOVEL approach to this Human Physiology textbook was keeping health sciences students, such as nursing, pre-med/medical, pharmaceutical, and exercise sciences majors in mind. Human Physiology for Health Professions teaches human physiology, while drawing connections to medications, human health and disease, and clinical applications. Therefore, preparing the reader for a career in a clinical setting.

In addition to textbook basics, this work offers (1) "Recent Discoveries of anatomical and physiological systems", (2) "Physiology and Medicine" Boxes - informative notations on how the chapter topic underscores medical interventions (e.g., "Cardioversions, Implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs) and Artificial Cardiac Pacemakers" for the Chapter 9 content on Cardiovascular System & Disease Chapter), (3) "Health and Disease" Boxes- connecting human physiology and disease or pathophysiology (e.g., "Coronary Artery Disease" for the Chapter 2 content on Biomolecules), (4) REAL "Health Profession Interviews" - available in select chapters, Health Professionals (such as Doctors/MDs, and Registered Dietician/RDs) include an interview and real medical case study., (5) "Clinical Review Boxes" - questions connecting the human physiology chapter content with clinical approaches, and (6) Photos of medical anomalies, treatment protocols, and diseases.

Dr. Mahaffey has written this textbook with future health practitioners in mind. The overarching goal is to present up-to-date information, with real clinical practice methodologies, case studies, and health practitioner interviews, to draw connections between studying human physiology and human health/disease, and to prepare students for the next stages: pathophysiology and clinical studies.

Chapter 1: Recent Discoveries in Human Anatomy and Physiology (2016–2022)

Chapter 2: Biomolecules, Health, and Diagnostics

Chapter 3: Genetics and the Human Reproductive System

Chapter 4: Cellular Energy,  Metabolism, and Transport

Chapter 5: Circulatory and Lymphatic Systems

Chapter 6: Chemical Messengers & Endocrine System

Chapter 7: Nervous Systems

Chapter 8: Musculoskeletal System and Disease

Chapter 9: Cardiovascular System and Disease

Chapter 10: Respiratory System and Disease

Chapter 11: Urinary System Health and Disease

Chapter 12: Gastrointestinal (GI) System and Disease

Angela Mahaffey

Angela Mahaffey, PhD is a Clinical Faculty member at the Marcella Niehoff School of Nursing, Loyola University Chicago. Her expertise in Human Physiology education and curricular development has been displayed in articles published in the American Physiological Journal (Advances in Physiology Education), Human Anatomy and Physiological Society Journal (HAPS Educator), as well as and Podcast for the American Physiological Society, in which she discusses her development of "Core Principles in Physiology for BSN and BSES Students". She is also renowned in the field of chemical education for health professions, publishing in journals and presenting at National conferences. Dr. Mahaffey acknowledges her mother, Debra, and the Most High GOD, in her efforts to design a textbook for students of human health.
