¡Vitalidad! is a content and real-task based textbook that prepares health professionals to communicate with Spanish-speaking patients and clients. The text and has been written for novice to intermediate level students and contains six units which increase in complexity. The first three units and corresponding chapters (Greetings and Farewells, Nursing, and Exercise and Movement) are organized as building blocks, each chapter and unit scaffolding the next. Units 4-6 focus on specific health professions (Communication Disorders, Psychology, and Public Health). The vocabulary and structures are often recycled for purposes of review and to reinforce communication skills. This text includes several exciting features: interpersonal, interpretative, and presentational activities; hover over definitions of key words and phrases; real-life dialogues with audio; links to authentic texts and videos; cultural content; accompanying theme-based grammar reviews and activities; color-coded grammatical structures; proficiency-based assessments; flip-card vocabulary review; and self-assessment check points. Piemontese
Dr. Luisa Piemontese is Full Professor of Spanish at Southern CT State University, where she has coordinated the Spanish program, the Basic Language program in Spanish, and the Teacher Certification program for World Languages. She received her PhD in Spanish literature from Yale University, where she subsequently served as director of Beginning and Intermediate Spanish. At Yale, she received the Elm City prize and the prestigious prize for Excellence in Teaching. She is also a recipient of the Teacher of the Year Award in the category of College and University from the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese. Since 2013, she has been developing the curriculum for Spanish for the Health Professions at Southern CT State University.
