We hope you enjoy this book. You will note that our chapters highlight insights from The Secret Garden. Throughout the book, we will consider the ways Mary took care of plants in the secret garden to help them thrive just as she led Colin from a world of darkness to the joys of light and friendship. Mary’s experiences with discovery, growth, and renewal serve as metaphors for the ways we nourish students with literacy insights and innovations to help them thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

This book emphasizes the art and the science of teaching to promote maximum learning opportunities for all students. It can be used as a resource for peer mentoring, cross-age tutoring, and a variety of interactive learning experiences. Each chapter provides opportunities for reflection with tips for innovations and stories to enjoy collaboratively. We have included great resources from the Internet with the realization that some of these resources may be here today and gone tomorrow. If a website has been discontinued, we encourage you to list the topic in your browser to explore additional options for dynamic reading and writing connections. Evidence-based strategies are emphasized throughout the book to empower you with insights and innovations for effective teaching.

We hope you enjoy literacy exploration that leads to amazing insights and innovations in your classroom and beyond. This book is designed to give you tools to bring the best of the world into the classroom. We invite you to unlock and activate effective teaching and learning with Keys for Literacy Innovations.
