Choose your own words to remember when you need them the most related to your
specialty and demand. Place them in a format where they can be printed and
placed behind your work badge. This will be your personal companion when you
are in a room with a Spanish speaking patient, and you forget what you have
learned in class.
Dr. Michelle Lenox, originally from the island of Puerto Rico, has been living in
the United States for over 23 years. Her journey in healthcare began after earning
her Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) from Keiser University in 2008. She
started her clinical career at Cape Canaveral Hospital, working in the
Oncology/Medical-Surgical unit. Driven by a passion for growth and education,
she returned to Keiser to complete her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN),
followed by a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN).
During her graduate studies, Dr. Lenox expanded her clinical expertise by joining
Holmes Regional Medical Center as a float nurse, where she trained in specialties
such as Pediatrics, Emergency Room, and Mother-Baby care. Her passion for
teaching led her to become a clinical instructor and guest lecturer at Keiser
University. Later, she relocated to Colorado Springs and joined the University of
Colorado’s Beth-El College of Nursing as a pharmacology instructor, also leading
advanced and basic medical-surgical clinicals.
In 2019, Dr. Lenox earned her Doctorate in Nursing Science. Over the past four
years, she has taught Public and Community Health, as well as Health Promotion,
continuing her commitment to educating the next generation of healthcare
professionals.
Her personal experience as a non-English-speaking patient in the U.S. healthcare
system profoundly shaped her mission. After facing both compassionate and
challenging encounters, she was inspired to master English and eventually share
her language skills with other healthcare providers. This journey led to the
creation of A Leer, a textbook and workbook designed to bridge communication
gaps between providers and Spanish-speaking patients.
Dr. Lenox is also a certified Spanish Medical Interpreter with nearly eight years of
experience helping patients and providers connect through language. Her work
reflects a deep commitment to culturally competent care, education, and advocacy.
