Karl is Professor of Sociology at the University of Alaska Anchorage. He has taught courses in Deviance, Social Problems, Formal Organizations, Program Evaluation, Research Methodology, and other areas. He has worked in applied and clinical social science settings since 1977, and in Alaska since 1987. Research interests and activities have included the social and economic consequences of the Exon Valdez Oil Spill in 1989, advocacy and organizations for children and adults with disabilities, research coordination for the UAA Center for Human Development, various community-based service learning projects with UAA’s Center for Engagement and Learning, and Court Appointed Special Advocacy (CASA) work in child protection. He has been actively involved in university service, curriculum development, program evaluation, and academic dispute resolution. He and his wife of 35 years have two adult sons ages 19 and 22.
