Globalization and immigration have empowered individuals of different cultures to interact with one another more often than ever before (Mok, 1999). Consequently, there has been a growing trend of mixed culture relationships in the United States. In the year 2017, nearly 20% of newlyweds were married to someone of a different race or ethnicity (Livingston & Brown, 2017). Additionally, over 21% of married couple households have at least one foreign-born spouse (Larsen & Walters, 2013).
