Margins of the Literary Imagination: A Black Speculative Fiction Reader grows out of the need for a textbook that offers instructional resources for writing in a class that focuses on Black speculative fiction. This book joins existing collections of the genre with the aim to expand access and knowledge of Black speculative fiction.
However, Margins of the Literary Imagination differs in that it blends reading with the practice of literary analysis and writing. Like other literature textbooks, this book contains explanations of key literary elements as well as questions for brainstorming and discussion. Each of the eleven stories is accompanied by a brief biography, notes on some significant aspect of the story, and discussion questions. To assist students with their writings, I have provided an overview of the writing process as well. Such a book is complementary to a class that asks students to explore their thoughts in writing and to learn the actual process.
