Communication is vital in every facet of our lives, and critical thinking about communication and social relations is an important developmental process. Children - like the rest of us - face daily challenges and with opportunities to become better communicators in their relations with family, friends, and acquaintances. More than Just Words is intended to encourage reflection, critical thinking, and the development of communication competencies at an early age.

The book is written for young readers, and for parents, grandparents, teachers who are encouraged to engage with children to discuss the ideas and situations presented. The book is organized into two broad sections: The first section provides an introduction to key communication ideas and tools, and the second section presents a series of communication tips and mini "case studies" - hypothetical situations to which the ideas and tools discussed in Section 1 can be applied. More than Just Words is designed to encourage thoughtful reflections and conversations about communication and social relations by children and adults to promote critical thinking, skill development, and an early start on these important life skills.

"More Than Just Words is a wonderful collection of information, tips, and everyday examples of how we, and in particular, kids, communicate. It provides a clear, useful breakdown of situations kids encounter every day, and explains, with words and illustrations, that there’s more than one way to navigate a situation. But that communication is at the heart of it all!! The competing forces of TV, social media, video games, and other distractions have made it less obvious that being able to interact with others is a basic and necessary skill, and one that requires constant practice! More Than Just Words should be required reading in classrooms, and certainly would be a great addition to any family’s library!"
Karen M. Verde

“It’s such a good read with wonderful examples and simple activities to try out the communication skills and strategies the book presents. An accomplished author and educator, Brent Ruben, and his youngest granddaughter did a wonderful job. Lots of pictures and examples. A beautiful little book that captures the most important things we all need to know and use when we communicate with others!!"
