Interpersonal communication is something you practice every day often without realizing it. This textbook takes an interpersonal approach that starts with real life, using familiar situations from friendships, families, romantic relationships, classrooms, workplaces, and online spaces to make communication concepts feel relevant and accessible. Rather than treating theory as abstract, I use it as a lens to help make sense of everyday interactions. Throughout the book there are real-life examples, including imperfect, meaningful, and sometimes uncomfortable examples to show how interpersonal communication theories play out in actual relationships. This text is designed to help you reflect on your own communication patterns, better understand your relationships, and make more intentional communication choices. The goal is not “perfect” communication, but more thoughtful, ethical, and effective connection with others and with yourself. This book focuses on that there are no awkward silences but instead intentional practices we can utilize every day with every relationship.
