One of the Guys: Masculinity in Social Context aims to bring men and women to an understanding of what it means to be part of the culture of masculinity. This text introduces the reader to a contemporary appreciation of the macro and micro-influences on men and masculinities. The book applies the study of men and masculinities into social contexts by examining the institutional, interpersonal, and individual elements of men's lives.

One of the Guys: Masculinities in Social Context:

  • Includes themes such as the paradox of masculinity, diversity, popular culture and the media, gender theory, and recent developmental changes in the life-cycle for young men.
  • Emphasizes the importance of feminism and Women's Studies throughout - men are placed in the heart of gendered discourses that light a path toward social justice.
  • Brings evidence to the idea that traditional men may be maladapted to a society that is transforming rapidly.

Ron Matson, Associate Professor and Chair of Sociology at Wichita State University, has taught a men and masculinities course for 32 years. Matson writes as he teaches and encourages the readers to reflect personally on their own life experiences and take responsibility for "doing gender" in ways that move ourselves, our communities, and our world toward a more humane future.
