Picture Books: More Than Meet the Eye is an important addition to the rich knowledge base that already exists on children’s literature. This book is visionary; it presents and promotes a vision of picture books that significantly extends traditional notions about children’s literature. Specifically, it challenges the notion that children’s literature is mostly, if not exclusively, for children. Lisa Parker (Ciecierski) cannot remember a time when picture books were not a key part of her life. Lisa has been an educator for 25 years and has utilized picture books for her instruction at the elementary, middle, secondary, and even university level. Currently, Lisa is an Associate Professor of Language and Literacy Education at Penn State Erie, the Behrend College as well as the director of PennLake National Writing Project. She teaches classes, conducts research, and provides professional development linked to literacy, writing instruction, and children’s literature. She specifically focuses on teaching others how to utilize high-quality literature, especially picture books, to teach academic standards. She can be reached at lmc61@psu.edu.
