This book is intended for beginning and intermediate audio and video content producers. The focus of the book is to provide the reader with easy-to-understand concepts and techniques for producing short-form content using inexpensive and readily available hardware and software. While many of the concepts and techniques can be applied to long-form content creation, up to and including feature-length motion pictures, the purpose and focus of this book is to help the student produce content for themself or future employer. More broadly, the contents of this book are intended to help the reader produce quality content; the kind that will help them achieve a professional look. The goal is to help the student match the quality of their content to the quality of the brand they are promoting.

While this book is not intended to be an equipment review for the media production field, it will discuss things to consider when making purchasing decisions. Given the desire by virtually all organizations, large and small, to have a video presence, many employees are finding themselves tasked with producing content. In addition to knowing the techniques necessary to produce effective content, it is necessary to determine what equipment is best for creation needs. This book hopes to assist with those decisions.

By using this digital and interactive textbook, students will learn concepts and techniques to help improve the overall look, sound, and effectiveness of their mobile media content!

John Lombardi

Dr. John Lombardi is a long-time content creator and educator. He has produced countless audio and video projects for local and regional clients. He is also an avid photographer and has had work selected for display in juried exhibits. Professionally, Dr. Lombardi has worked for several radio stations, television stations, newspapers, the University of Tennessee Athletics Department, and cable channels including ESPN. He started his video work using ¾” U-Matic systems and progressed through Beta, VHS, S-VHS, 8mm (video), Hi8, DVC (digital video cassette), and now fully embraces the digital world of flash memory, hard-disc recording, and live streaming.

As an educator, Dr. Lombardi has taught countless audio and video production courses. More recently he has focused on classes focusing on podcasting and “mobile media” content creation. Knowing that employees of virtually every business or organization large or small will have (or need) an online audio/video presence, his mobile media class (and this book) focus on producing meaningful content with more accessible gear like mobile devices and affordable peripherals.
