Public Speaking 4.0 is a turn-key, online course package that covers the scope of introductory public speaking and provides students with instruction for effective AND ethical use of AI. The two authors, Janice Thorpe and Sherry Morreale, chose to develop this new edition for online public speaking instructors based on three assumptions regarding online teaching and learning in higher education:
- Artificial intelligence (AI) and programs like ChatGPT are here to stay and will impact instructors and students, most especially those in online technology-driven public speaking courses.
- Instructors of online public speaking courses have a choice. They can worry about the negative impact of AI on their courses and students. Or they can use the challenges inherent in AI as new pedagogical opportunities for enhancing online public speaking instruction.
- The authors used their extensive online teaching and research experiences to provide pedagogical resources to support the effective and ethical use of AI in public speaking courses. They have expanded the previous edition to a new Public Speaking 4.0: Navigating Technology and AI. This new 4th edition describes AI in accessible language, including activities and assignments for using tools like ChatGPT creatively and ethically.

Janice Thorpe has been teaching in the Communication Department for more than 27 years, and have taught a variety of courses during that time. She absolutely love what she does and can’t imagine doing anything else. Her main academic interests include online education, instructional communication, and assessment of student learning. She is the Director of the Online program, Course Director for Research Methods, as well as the Assessment Director for the Communication Department. She is an enthusiastic advocate for rigorous, quality online learning courses and programs. Her most recent research project focuses on learning communities in the online environment. Additionally, she has written a textbook specifically for advanced public speakers and the skills and tools they will need for 21st-century presentations
Sherwyn Morreale is Professor in Communication at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs. Her main research and teaching interests include instructional communication, public speaking, communication competence and its assessment, and the nature of trust - nationally and internationally. Her research has appeared in leading journals, and she is the lead author of four communication textbooks, including a new edition of an online public speaking book. She recently served as co-author of a new book about building trust in COMMunity. She also has authored numerous articles and chapters for collected volumes and encyclopedias in the communication discipline. From 1997-2005, Morreale served as the Associate Director of National Communication Association.
I appreciate the thought and care spent on public speaking, one couched in tradition but also recognizing new technological realities and how they affect the speechmaking process.
