Public Speaking Simplified uses a practical approach known as the Five Notecard Method, which provides students with the tools to write an effective outline first and then complete their notecards, enabling them to deliver their speech successfully.
In addition, Public Speaking Simplified explores strategies to alleviate the anxiety that often comes with the prospect of having to speak in front of a room full of people.
Public Speaking Simplified has unique points that will help any speaker:
- A total of 10 chapters that keep the focus on what is important
- Five chapters dedicated to the outlining and notecard writing process
- Uses the power of positivity to overcome speech anxiety
- Includes personal, encouraging author videos that illustrate the chapter content

Dr. J is an Assistant Teaching Professor and the Basic Course Director at Bowling Green State University (BGSU). At BGSU, she teaches the Basic Course: Introduction to Public Speaking, Business and Professional Speaking, Interpersonal, Family Communication, and other fantastic communication courses. She earned her PhD in Interpersonal and Family Communication from the University of Nebraska – Lincoln (UNL). Even before earning her PhD in communication, she was interested in talking for a living, dreaming of becoming a Broadway star or the next on-air talent for the Today Show. However, her true calling is being a professor, helping her students achieve their “ah-ha” moments in a subject she loves. She has two amazing sons, Johnny and Jett, with her high school sweetheart, James, and they are blessed to live by their family near Lake Erie, where they spend a lot of time together. Dr. J hopes for many more years in the classroom at BGSU, where she can continue to work with students, and she also enjoys coaching one-on-one with individuals who want to improve their communication skills.
