John P. McHale (PhD, University of Missouri, 2002) is a Professor in the School of Communication at Illinois State University. McHale is the author of Convergent Writing: Telling a Good Story Well. (4th Ed.; 2022), Communicating for Change: Strategies of Social and Political Advocates (2004), coauthor of Saintly Sex: John Paul II, Gender, Sex & the Catholic Church (2014), Bush versus Kerry: A functional analysis of campaign 2004 (2007), Campaign 2000: A functional analysis of presidential campaign discourse (2003), The primary decision: A functional analysis of presidential primary debates, 1948-2000 (2001), and has published a number of book chapters and academic articles on political discourse.
McHale has won several awards for his work as a screenwriter, documentary film
producer, and director. McHale has written 7 produced films, directed 5 produced films, produced 9 films, executive produced over 20 films, and has received over 10 awards for his film work from a number of organizations including the 2021 Best Film Script Competition of the Broadcast Education Association, 2022 BEA Award of Excellence in Film Writing. 2012 Grand Prize for Short Film Writing from Flickers: Rhode Island International Film Festival and the 2007 Walter Cronkite Civic Engagement Leadership Award at the United Nations. McHale also wrote, directed, produced the award winning Picture This: The Fight to Save Joe, narrated by Danny Glover, which was an important catalytic factor in Joe Amrine’s release from Missouri death row in 2005.
