It was June 26, 2013 and thirty-two-year-old Jeremy was standing on the steps of the San Francisco City Hall building with Daniel, his partner of four years. They were amidst a throng of jubilant same-sex marriage enthusiasts who were rallying in support of the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to invalidate California’s Proposition 8, which would allow same sex marriages in California to resume shortly. He had just snapped an Instagram photo of the two of them smiling and posted it to his Facebook account with the caption “Now we can get married.” Just moments later his phone rang and he heard his Grandma Sophie from Minnesota on the other end, “Congratulations, you two. Just saw your post, when’s the wedding?”
