The Sociology of Education explores how sociological thinking can deepen our understanding of education as a central social institution. Authors Lisa Munson and Andrew Mannheimer emphasize the importance of historical context, theoretical frameworks, empirical methods, and attention to social inequalities in sociological analysis. These core principles shape the structure of the book, which includes chapters on the history of education in America, major theoretical perspectives, research methodologies, and key dimensions of inequality such as social class, race and ethnicity, and gender and sexuality. The final chapter addresses contemporary debates and challenges in education, inviting readers to consider the future of schooling in an evolving society. Throughout the text, reflection exercises prompt students not only to absorb foundational knowledge, but also to think critically, draw connections across time, and apply sociological insights to real-world educational issues.
