Marko Hakovirta

Dr. Marko Hakovirta is a professor in sustainable business at North Carolina State University. He has a PhD and MSc in Physics from the University of Helsinki and an MBA from Emory University. Dr. Marko Hakovirta’s scholarly work is focused on sustainable business, responsible innovation, and entrepreneurship with an emphasis on the bioeconomy. He also publishes research on interdisciplinary work on topics such as processing and engineering of renewable biomaterials and valorization of waste. His teaching experience includes sustainability and innovation management, life cycle analysis and physics. Dr. Hakovirta brings his more than 20 years of leadership experience working on local, national and international topics in research, education, and strategic sustainability and innovation management. He has previously worked as Senior Vice President, Innovation and R&D including New Business Development at Stora Enso Corporation and he served as Group Vice President, Technology, Environment and Quality at Metso Corporation. He has held leadership positions at North Carolina State University, Auburn University and Georgia Tech and served as a board member in TAPPI (Technical Association for Pulp and Paper Industry) and SWST (The Society of Wood Science & Technology). As a Scientist he has worked as a Fellow at CERN (European Particle Physics Laboratory), as a director’s funded Post-Doctoral Fellow at Los Alamos National Laboratory and as a Junior Fellow at the Academy of Finland. He engages with global businesses, aligning sustainability and value creation. Dr. Hakovirta is a member of the North Carolina State University’s Faculty Senate, Fulbright specialist, TAPPI Fellow and EVA Business Fellow. He advises and consults small and large corporations in sustainable business
