A major goal of this text—aside from providing an overview of K–12 education in the United States and of the teaching profession—is to help readers discern whether teaching might be a good career choice for them.
It offers an exciting yet realistic glimpse into what it is like to be a teacher in today’s schools and classrooms. Many individuals taking an introductory education course want to know if they have the attitudes, aptitudes, skills, and dispositions to be successful in this field. Thus, this introductory textbook aims to provide those who are considering teaching as a career with the information needed to make an informed decision. Many prospective teachers have misconceptions about teaching and are overly optimistic in their expectations. Although idealism has its advantages, naïveté for a beginning teacher could be problematic.
The aim of this text is to be straightforward and realistic in the portrayal of what it is like to teach, without deterring capable and caring individuals from the field.
