As the principal investigator of a community-wide research project to uncover systems dynamics that had the potential to reduce or even eliminate homelessness, Alexa often found herself meeting with directors of social service organizations in order to create opportunities to interview their clients who were experiencing homelessness. It was the second year of the project and all of the materials, plans, and questions for the survey were refined and approved by her university’s human subjects review board. The project itself had led her to think more broadly about what was important to her in her community. Inspired by one of her new acquaintances, she often found herself repeating his words: “The measure of a good community is how it treats those who are most vulnerable.”
